About Yoheved
I am a LMSW in good standing. I hold a BA from Columbia University (Barnard College), a BA from JTS, a MEd from Hebrew College and an MSW from Louisiana State University. In addition to these credentials, I have extensive experience in community organizing, community care, and creative world-building oriented towards love, justice, and vulnerability.
I grew up around the U.S., I was a first-generation college student, and I know what it’s like to maneuver in environments where you are different, feel like an outsider, or feel unwanted. I’m a parent of multiples, and understand how being utterly responsible for children who did not ask to be born changes your life and brings you into contact with the illusion of control, the unexpected inside of yourself, the divine, the abyss, the vulnerability of being alive, and the intensity of love and fear that we all manage inside.
I know what it's like to need to radically change your life for the better: how daunting it can be, how we can approach big changes with a slowly-dawning sense of reality because it’s too much to take in all at once, and the genuine courage that change requires.
I use plenty of labels to describe myself, and as a multi-cultural person I am committed to cultural competency for all my patients. That being said, cultural competence is just the beginning of witnessing a person’s soul and helping them face themselves, their fears, their deepest needs. For that, you need a therapist who has had true contact with themselves, which enables them to meet others, as well. I do that work all the time, every day. I love human beings and our minds with fierce devotion. All of the “isms” that inhabit society profoundly shape, limit, and propel our lives, and yet human life is richer than any one identity could encapsulate.
